Invictus (Feat. Fatimah Gilliam)

Award season has come to an end, so we look back at a past awards  darling to see how it holds up today. Spoiler, it doesn't. 2009's Invictus tells the story of Nelson Mandela and the 1995 South African World Cup rugby team and earned Oscar nominations for both Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Lucky for us, Fatimah Gilliam (author of Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You) is here to help us break it all down! 
We discuss Mandela's rugby obsession, the lack of apartheid in a movie about apartheid, and what exactly this movie wants us to feel good about?

The Phantom (Feat. Tarik Davis)

Today! We travel back to simpler times, before cinematic universes, to a world of ridiculous costumes, confused racial stereotypes, and a villain who only operates at 10. We're talking 1996's The Phantom, and we're joined by the amazing Tarik Davis (The Amber Ruffin Show). 
We talk about the poorly named "rope people", if The Phantom actually has any powers, and his ghost dad's bizarre interest in his sex life. We also discuss the worst Black History Month job offers.

A white supremacist romantic thriller? Say it ain't so. Today we discuss 1988's Betrayed, a movie that asks, "is it love if you don't hunt a Black man with an uzi in the middle of the night"?

American Fiction

We take a break from the never ending parade of white saviors to talk about a movie we actually liked, American Fiction. Written and directed by Cord Jefferson, and starring Jeffery Wright, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander, and Traci Ellis Ross, it recently was nominated for 4 Academy Awards. 
We talk about the amazing cast, our thoughts on the message of the movie, parallels to Bamboozled and 40 Year Old Version and much more!

Carbon Copy

Oooof! We swear we love Denzel, but this week we travel back to look at his very first movie, 1981's Carbon Copy. Someone thought of white dad, Black son, and took the rest of the day off. 
There's a million things wrong with this movie, but most of all it's the waste of Denzel. We discuss the tired gags, how the director of Coolie High could have been behind this, and much more!

2023 Wrap up

Just in time for 2024, our 2023 wrap up! Jordan and Cameron take a look back at the year that was, the good and the bad.

White Dog (Feat. Carmen and Kemet)

Happy Holidays everyone! As we do this time of year, we welcome our sisters Carmen and Kemet to join us on the show. Our selection this year, the controversial 1982 film, White Dog. 
Directed by Samuel Fuller and shelved by Paramount before it was even released, the film follows a racist dog who goes on a rampage, and we have questions. Like what the audition process was like for the Black people getting attacked by dogs. Also, why did they care more about curing the dog than...I don't know, the multiple people the dog kills?
We can't believe we're already at the end of 2023. So much love and gratitude to all of our wonderful listeners who supported us through this year. We love you and we hope you take some time to be around those you love to close the year. We've got some big things in store for 2024, so stay tuned! 

Native Representation in Media (Feat. Joel Robinson and Joanna Hearne)

This one is special! We're so thrilled to be joined by Joel Robinson, a member of the Osage Nation, and professor of Native American and global indigenous media studies, Joanna Hearne, to discuss the current state of Native representation in media. 
It's an incredible conversation that covers Killers of the Flower Moon, Reservation Dogs, some film history, and tons of great recommendations to watch.

Black Like Me (Feat. Dare Johnson)

As the Holiday season starts up, we turn towards a classic, and one we've been low-key avoiding. But the time has finally come for us to watch one of the craziest movies we've seen so far, 1964's Black Like Me.  
We're joined by friend of the show Dare Johnson to talk about a movie where a white man pretends to be Black to see "what it's like." If that wasn't bad enough, it's based on a real experiment done by journalist John Howard Griffin. 
We've got a lot to talk about with this one, including how not one Black person called him out for obviously being a white man, how no Black person knew he was a white man, and how not one damn Black person said, "ain't you a white man"? 
As we get ready to close out 2023, we just want to say how much we appreciate you all and we hope you're able to wind down and spend some quality time with those you love. Times are rough, so be sure to hold on to the good things.

Killers of the Flower Moon (Feat Kaili Y. Turner)

You know we had to talk about this one! We're joined by the super talented Kaili Y. Turner to discuss the buzziest Oscar film of the season, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. 
Based on the book of the same name and depicting the heinous Osage Indian murders that spanned over 10 years, we get into what this movie would have looked like from an Osage perspective, reaction from Native critics, and much, much more.
